The new Gloo service from Globe Telecom Broadband looks pretty cool. It allows you to collaborate in a virtual space with you friends. It allows you to post Facebook pictures, web images and videos into spaces where you and your friends and family can collaborate in real-time. Sounds pretty cool!

Time to buy some more load from Globe. Surfing the internet is great on the new HTC Magic phone running the Android operating system from Google. Globe makes the new HTC Magic available in the Philippines and it’s free at GPlan or GFlex 7000 in Megamall Globe Telecom Business Center (4/F Cyberzone, Building B).

We have played with some android phones and have loved their user interface and speed. Has anyone tried the HTC Magic? We would love a review of this phone.

Typhoon Ondoy (International name: Ketsana) has devastated millions of Filipinos in the Philippines.

Ondoy roared across the northern Philippines near Manila on Saturday, dumping more than a month’s worth of rain in just 12 hours.

Nearly 300,000 people were affected by storm, including some 47,000 people who were brought to about 100 schools, churches and other evacuation shelters, officials said.

Smart Communications started to run an advertisement claiming that its SmartBro wireless broadband service is the fastest, based on a public field test conducted by a company called PSRC (Philippine Survey and Research Center).

The SmartBro TV commercial showed a celebrity host testing a SmartBro kit and a second kit that is blurred on screen, apparently the unit from rival Globe. The host utilized the popular bandwidth testing site SpeedTest.Net, with the results showing SmartBro as the fastest.

However, rival Globe Telecom, which owns the Globe Tattoo brand, questioned the credibility of Smart’s claims saying that their rival’s test was full of fallacies as it used one website for measurement. In a press conference, Globe’s network engineers claimed that SpeedTest.Net only captures the “burst speed” of the network being tested during a certain period, but not the actual total speed within a sustained period.

Broadband and Landline Group Marketing Head Mari Litonjua added that Smart’s test was only within one place. To counter this claim Litonjua said they wanted an independent review and tapped telecommunications system integrator NESIC Philippines to conduct a series of tests using Globe Tattoo and SmartBro.

They also included a competing kit from Sun’s own wireless broadband service but only for Metro Manila where the service is only available.

Instead of just using SpeedTest.net, Litonjua showed they also used a speed testing software called Netpersec and a second speed testing website, 2Wire.com.

“We don’t want do the test in one place just like they did. So we tested it in several areas,” Litonjua said, noting that these areas were chosen at random and based on foot traffic.

As the NESIC results showed, Globe Tattoo outmatched SmartBro in all of the tests. Only Sun Cellular’s wireless broadband performed nearly the same as Globe Tattoo, and it also outgunned SmartBro.

The NESIC test, however, did not include a prolonged time-based test, which could also affect the kit’s bandwidth. There are external, uncontrolled factors that can affect bandwidth speed, even in high-signal locations. One of these include the number of mobile phone and wireless broaband users in a given area who are connecting at the same time.

Still, Litonjua stressed that the purpose of the test was to get the most comprehensive measurement and make people aware of the claims. “What’s important is user experience and we’re trying to address that.”

SmartBro has over 500,000 users in the Philippines. Globe claims that it has over 110,000 wireless broadband subscribers, the majority of which are from its Globe Tattoo service.

Smart has yet to respond to Globe’s test results.

Range, Pricing

A factor that affects the success of an app store is its range of applications. Other handset vendors such as Apple and Nokia were able to immediately tie up with Indian developers and media partners to offer India-exclusive applications on their respective application stores but RIM has only managed three. Will Indian users be dismayed by this small-scale, pocket-sized attempt? One wonders if such launches could spark off more independent mobile app sites on the lines of Getjar.com.

We attempted to search for the Indian pricing of applications online at the store – it is unavailable as of now. We have contacted the company to get details of paid applications and their pricing and will update this post soon.

Can we expect moderation in pricing compared to other app stores? Maybe not – the company has chosen to stay in its ivory tower while other handset manufacturers (Nokia with its E63 and HTC, Acer) are lowering price barriers.

Will Anybody Really Use The Store?

Recently, at the Geodesic earnings call, Kiran Kulkarni, MD, Geodesic, had revealed something that suggests (and this is our extrapolation and not Kulkarni’s) the app store might not find many takers. He said, “Fact is that 79% of Blackberry users use only voice in India and not its e-mail features.” So much for its “push e-mail” slogan! RIM might need to come up with new strategy for India and invest largely in advertisements that expound the real value of the handsets and that will encourage users to explore its functions.
